The Finnish company Artek, specialized in luxury Scandinavian glassware and furniture was designed in 1935 by the architect Alvar Aalto, his wife Aino Aalto, visual arts promoter Maire Gullichsen and art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl. The name Artek came from their desire to combine art and technology to create beautiful and functional, high-quality furniture. The armchairs, chairs, stools, tables and other Artek products are internationally renowned for their comfort, solidity and organic design.
Artek’s most famous products are without a doubt those by Alvar Aalto. After thoroughly experimenting with wood, the architect discovered a revolutionary method which allowed him to achieve 90° curves. This is how he created the famous “L-shape”, which then became the basis for many of his designs, such as the Paimio armchair, Aalto 80 table, or the legendary Stool 60.
Artek now works with architects, designers and artists from around the world, such as Eero Aarnio, Shigeru Ban or Juha Leiviskä, in order to continue to offer innovative creations, which are just as much works of art as pieces of furniture.
